It Gets Better: Apple Employees

A group of Apple employees have released a new video contribution to the It Gets Better Project, a website and movement seeking to help LGBT teens to deal with bullying and other issues in an attempt to prevent suicides by sharing stories and encouragement about how their lives will improve as they get older.

For more than eight hours, the Apple employees’ “It Gets Better” video was banned from YouTube for a terms of service violation claim of “depicting harmful activities.” The video, created for Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” Project, featuring Apple employees discussing growing up gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, and coming out and living openly, and “better” as adults, was removed from YouTube sometime Friday evening or early Saturday morning, and restored hours later.

MacObserver first reported the video had been “pulled,” in an article dated Saturday at 2:16 AM. A reader comment at 10:12 AM noted the video had been restored.

It has been suggested that in retaliation for Apple’s banning of two anti-gay Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) apps that supporters of the apps got together and staged a protest by way of reporting the video to YouTube. It is not known how many reports activate an automatic deletion.

YouTube has not yet stated why the video was removed or restored.

German Couple Convert Train Cars into Comfy Home,

Vanessa Stallbaum and Marco Stepniak love trains so much they decided to integrate two old mail cars in the design of their new house.

The German couple met on a train, and their first vacation was a four-day train ride from Berlin to Kazakhstan, so when Marco told his girlfriend he wanted to build their house around two train cars, she immediately agreed. 34-year-old Stepniak got the crazy idea 15 years ago, when he attended a youth club, close to his home town of Herten. It was set up in two old train cars and he remembers thinking someone could actually live in them.

Two new train cars like the two wanted to use for their new house, cost around €500,000 ($725,000), but they were lucky enough to find an online ad for two second-hand mail cars from Switzerland. Built between 1974 and 1975, the two railway antiques were in remarkably good condition, and they cost only €20,000 ($29,000). Unfortunately, transporting them from Switzerland to Germany actually cost more than the cars themselves €26,000 ($37,600), but  Vanessa and Marco spared no expense in order to realize their dream.
 

After the two mail cars were cleaned and repainted in Mönchengladbach, they were transported to the construction site, in Ruhr. They hired an architect to make a house plan according to their drawings, got some friends and Marco’s father to help restore and convert the train cars into living space, and the building was under way. Converting the cars was much tougher then they expected, and finding an expert that could insulate them and add underfloor heating wasn’t easy, but they somehow got it done.


Marco and Vanessa decided to retain as many of the train car facilities as possible, so they somehow found a way to integrate the old letter classification spaces and tool cabinets in their new kitchen. The other car was transformed into a bathroom so not much of the original interior could be saved. Seen from above, their unique house looks like a big “H” with the two mail cars on the sides and a big living room connecting them. While they had to take a 16-year credit to build their house, the young couple love the way it turned out and don’t regret their choice for a moment.

How to read a web address,

1. Do you recognize the domain name?

The domain name is found after the http:// and www. to the first forward slash /. For example in the URL www.novemberlearning.com, novemberlearning.com is the domain name.

· A domain name can provide quality of information of a site or

2.  What is the extension in the domain name?

Extensions are to show the type of establishment

COMMON EXTENSIONS

.edu       Educational organization (most US universities)

.k12       US school site (not all US schools use this)

.ac         Academic institution (outside of US)

.sch        School site (some schools outside of the US use this)

.com       Company (usually .co in the UK)

.org        Any organization

.gov       Government agency

.net        Network

.mil        Military institution

New extensions to look for are .biz, .name, .pro, .info. All are used for commercial purposes.

· Extensions can include country codes

· Some extensions provide reliable information than others.

· Reliable are .edu, .gov, .k12. watch out for are .com, .org, .net.

3. Are you on a personal page?

· You may not recognize the domain name.

· If you are on personal page information may not be trustworthy.

· personal pages created by an individual, sometimes the pages offer highly biased opinions.

· URL such as jdoe and a tilde ~ or % or the word users or people or members frequently means you are on a personal web site.

· if a site has the extension, .edu, you need to look out for personal pages.

& now Website Validity...

How to know if a website is valid or not.

1. Check to see if the website has been updated or not. Information can be changed over the years so it’s best to see if the information given to you is recent. Don’t just check in one web page for the information there are other information on the internet.

2. Check who the author is and research on that person. It can easily be written by someone who wrote it by being bias.

3. Make sure it’s not a bias page. This can lead you to think that the information is correct.

4. The design of the page. Some design of the page allows you to think that it is valid. Colours and layout is very important because sometimes, you would not know if the writer itself is someone younger than the person searching the information.

5. The content. The information may be accurate but it might be written from there head and not from experience or research. So be careful of what they have written down.

6. Search on other search engines about it and check to see if they have other sources of websites.

7. Cut the URL shorter to direct you to the homepage of the site.

8.  Websites with .com, .org, .net, and .gov can possibly sites that are not valid information. .edu is valid because it’s either written by a school or a university. Some websites can be a blog which is written by a person or a group of people giving out information.

9. If you roam around the pages of the website you can tell if it’s valid or not because sometimes they give out links that can lead you to another website which does not involve with what you’re doing.

Cyber bullying…

Bullying is one of the ways to torment your victim. There are also cyber predators online which can pretend to be your friend. In the 21st century, bullying has changed into cyber bullying this is where they bully their victims by posting rumors about them online and they can easily be affected to what the others are saying. Cyber bullying has adapted into the technological society that we live in. Cyber bullying is the new way to bully others and it’s caused deaths around the world because of unwanted messages posted about them.

Cyber predators are the type to pretend to be your friend but in reality they want to know your secrets and spread it out to the people you know. This can affect how a person thinks because they’re trusting someone they don’t know. Cyber predators are one of the “spies” for cyber bullies to gain information about that person. Or they can always be another person who pretends to be someone they’re not. They also want to find out your information and use it for their own good.
Cyber bullying is the new form of bullying. The main targets of bullies are those that they don’t like. They discriminate by how they wear clothes or how they act towards students in their school. Rumors can easily be spread throughout the internet society by posting something into their blog. Or easily send emails that can be received by anyone of that persons contact. Cyber bully doesn’t have to be by online they can also be sent by text messages which can easily spread because whoever is next that person and receives can read it as well. It can affect the victim and it’ll make that person frightened of what might happen to him/her. Cyber bullying is a form of way that can affect that person easily, and that person might get a lower grade in school or worst if it is really bad they might end up killing themselves because of something that is being spread about them. Many of those that are affected can and will create bad choices to stop the pain which is caused by the bully.

Ever since our technology has developed so has the ways of how children act. They are smarter than their parents when they were children. As our technology improves so does the way of bullying they become harsher and more violent than ever. Cyber bullying is the main way to bully someone in our society today. They don’t have to see the victim they can easily be behind a computer and start spreading rumors about that person. Since technology has improved that means the way we communicate to each other has improved as well. Blogging, emailing or messengers are a fast way to send messages through the people we want to send it to. Cyber bullying should be stopped because it is causing unnecessary deaths throughout our world. We can easily be informed of what the victim is actually trying to say. Gossips can be spread around very easily but it doesn’t mean that it’s entirely true. Cyber bullying can cause ADD which is attention deficit disorder, which will cause problems with the person while she/he is growing up because they won’t be able to think for themselves.

Cyber bullying can be a threat to any victim. Cyber predators can gain information from that person and abuse it. It’s a new form of bullying which can affect the person and can easily harm themselves. Our technology is developing and so is our bullying, rumors can be spread throughout one society to another by using email. Cyber bullying is one of the common ways to bully someone while hiding their identity.

Important of Loving Yourself

“You talk to yourself all day.  If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
Therefore, repeat positive thoughts towards whatever you are feeling.  Some examples include:

1. I am a strong person.
2. I look great.
3. I am successful at accomplishing my goals. 
4. I value my good health.

When thinking and talking to yourself, it is important to have positive thoughts and constantly motivate yourself.  While the body is built for health, the mind is very powerful.  Therefore, if you tell yourself you are strong and beautiful, you will feel better as a person. When you have love for yourself and have self-acceptance, you grow with joy.

“Actively love yourself.”

    Understand that mistakes happen.  Build experience from them rather than slapping yourself in the face.  Practice forgiving yourself and constantly use forgiveness in self talk.  You can’t always stop negative things from happening in life, but you can control your response to them.

There are many keys to self acceptance:

• Think of unique things that set you apart from other people and draw good things from them. 
• Pick a person that you look up to and find reasons why you look up to them. 
• Take responsibility of your actions. 
• Achieve self control and practice saying “no” in certain situations.  
• Do something nice for another person. 
• Whenever you do or say anything that causes another person to like himself more, you find yourself liking yourself more as well.

Teen Yawns and then is unable to close her mouth!

Every high school classroom holds a few slack-jawed students. One British teen, however, unintentionally took the term to a new level.

Holly Thompson, 17, of Kingsthorpe, Northampton, was in the middle of a particularly enthralling class on politics when she reacted to the subject matter like many other students would -- she yawned.

But what happened next wasn't so typical. Her trap wouldn't shut, making her look like an anime character in a state of shock.

According to the Daily Mail, one of Thompson's classmates tried to help her close her gaping pie hole, but to no avail.

"I was so shocked, my expression probably said it all," she said. "I nudged my friend to show her what had happened but I was so embarrassed. When we realized we couldn't close it, she had to tell the teacher."

Adding insult to injury was the reaction from teachers and classmates. "All my classmates and teachers thought it was really funny, everyone burst out laughing. It was awful," she said.

Although the school nurse tried everything to jam the jaw shut, including putting a hot water bottle under her chin and using ice packs, MSNBC reported that Thompson eventually was sent -- dangling choppers and all -- to the hospital for additional treatment.

The doctor on duty, Ejiro Obakponovwe, didn't think Thompson's injury was a laughing matter.

"It can be quite serious, because she can't eat, can't really drink, and you get really dehydrated," Obakponovwe told the BBC show "Bizarre E.R." "But again, it's quite painful as well."

The good doctor tried an unusual and, some might say, depressing technique: She placed 26 tongue depressors in Thompson's mouth.

"The tongue depressors allowed the jaw to get tired, relax, so the jaw can click back into place," Obakponovwe said.

The treatment worked, but it still pains Thompson to talk about it.

"It was really bad at the hospital," she said. "I had to sit in the waiting room with a scarf over my mouth so nobody could see what had happened. It was really difficult to communicate with doctors as well.

"I thought they were just going to give me some medicine, not put splints in there."

Thompson's jaw was stuck in the open mouth, insert foot position for five hours. She ached for a few more hours afterward. Although tired, her doctor warned her to suppress expression.

"She has to avoid yawning," Obakponovwe said. "The jaw's a bit unstable."

What's happened to Thompson since her injury is even more jaw-dropping. She's become quite popular on YouTube. Ryan Seacrest even tweeted about her injury.

"That's great," she said. "But I think I'd rather be famous for something else."
